Home From Paris & Germany - What a Trip!!!

Sue, me, Tammy & Sarah on the rooftop at The Galleries Lafeyette

Just got home late last night from Paris and my three week whirlwind design trade show tour. To say it was the trip of a lifetime would be an understatement. I had an absolute blast with a great group of designers and workroom professionals who really reminded me why I do what I do.

The first day I ran into technical difficulty when I tried to use my hair dryer with my electric current converter which I have used many times before. I plugged it in and my dryer started smoking, sparking and then blew itself out. FRIED like a chicken! Needless to say the converter was well cooked to so I had to get another one from the hotel. It didn't accommodate a three prong plug so using my laptop was out of the question! No blogging for moi! I never did find another three prong adapter so please excuse my lack of posts while I was away. I will make up for that now!

Beth Hodges and Sue Sifakus at the Potterton Books booth Heimtextile - along with a shameless plug for my books

Heimtextile in Frankfurt was amazing and absolutely huge. I live in a city that puts on some large conventions and this place dwarfed anything I've seen in the US. It was eleven halls packed full of textile based product in every type, variety, material, construction, design, imaginable. The creativity and innovation is just fantastic. It took us almost fifteen or twenty minutes just to walk through the halls to the press center everyday from our hotel. I have never walked so much in my life! The overall impression of this show is in the professionalism and quality of the show, the vendors, and the convention space. It was absolutely first rate and showed an amazing range that just is not available in the US. I was also struck as I always am when in Europe with the way the people dress. Style rules the day and the men look fantastic in their fine suits ( boy how I wish we would bring back the suit here!) and women were dressed to the nines all in fantastic boots and furs. Black was the new black and I was glad that it was all I grought because anything light or colorful would have stood out. It is such a shame that we have lost the concept of dressing for success here in the US.

Sue Safikis, Beth Hodges, Deb Barrett, Dick Gentry, Jackie Von Tobel, Sharon Woodward, Gentry

Here is our Germany group having cocktails with Dick Gentry and his lovely wife from Wesco Fabrics. Dick had recently broken his leg skiing with his young grandson and it was quite ironic that we were meeting in a very badly decorated bar that was covered in fake snow ( cut up quilt batting) with an even faker miniature mountain on the wall. There was also a small igloo in the corner and our tables we're meant to represent snow or ice. Stunning!

The train ride from Frankfurt to Germany was absolutely beautiful. We traveled along the Rhine river which is dotted with castles and fortifications. It was snowy and cold but still a treat for the eyes. I love traveling by train in Europe because around every turn there is something amazing to see.

Cologne was fantastic and it was a tiny bit warmer than in Frankfurt and not snowing. We walked for miles every day in and out of the shows.

Here are our fearless leaders Susan Schultz and Deb Barrett planning our route back to the hotel after a long long day of walking the city streets viewing showrooms and vendors. This type of planning usually called for a nice glass of beer or wine and a snack at a local bar!

This was my usual view in Cologne. Me bringing up the rear of the trudging line as we searched for whatever gallery or showroom we were hunting for. It was great fun and even better exercise.

The Maison et Objet show was a 40 minute train ride out of Paris but worth every minute. Here I am at the entrance to one of the halls. The place was huge and seemed to cover miles of ground.

There were long lines for everything but our group was lucky enough to have VIP status
(Thanks to Deb & Susan!) so we had access to the private VIP lounge called Le Club. It was lovely and they served free drinks including champagne in the afternoon and snacks. We enjoyed Mimosas every afternoon. It was exhausting but devine!
I organizerd a few bloggers who were attending the show to meet up one night and we had a blast. Maryanne from Beadboard Up Country and Melanie from Cabinet de Curiosities we're so much fun and absolutely delightful. It was one of the highlights of the trip for me.

We also had a great opportunity arranged by Deb & Susan to meet with the staff from Maison et Objet to discuss the differences in US and French design market and got a private tour of the trend vignettes. They were incredibly hospitable to us all and provided us with complete access to the show including press credentials which allowed us to take pictures on the show floor which is expressly forbiddden to anyone without credentials. I'll be showing you many of the photos over the next few weeks.

Of course the highlight for all of us was this adorable Laduree sales cart. Here is my buddy Octive Healey buying macaroons after a long day of walking the floor. This was the one of the most popular places at the show. There was always a long line.

Another shamless plug - Octive and I showing off my books at the book store at Maison. I think the booksellers thought I was crazy taking pictures with books!

We had the great pleasure of meeting with Susan Hornbeak Ortiz, owner and designer of Shine Home one of my favorite furniture lines and her new social media representative Leslie Carothers. They were one of a handful of American vendors showing there and there booth was gorgeous.

Now that I'm home you'd think that my trade show adventure would be over but that is not the case. I have to get over to the Las Vegas World Market winter show which is running this weeek along with the Surfaces Show. I'm going to meet Juan Montoya tonight att he LVWMC , one of my design idols at a reception in his honor. Can't wait!!!!

Pictures of some great stuff from the trip next post - stay tuned......

Stop #2 Cologne Germany

The second stop on my European trip will be Cologne, Germany for the IMM Cologne design show.

I can't wait to see the beautiful Cathedral. It looks spectacular and is the largest church in all of Germany.

Looks like quite a lively city.

I'm also excited about visiting the birthplace of the original Eau de Cologne 4711.

I'm in love with the bottle and the packaging. I'm going to have to pick some up! Hope it smells good.....

Heading to Heimtextile

Happy New Year!

Frankfurt Trade Show Center

I'm counting down the days until I take off for my European design adventure! Nine days left to be exact and I still have a lot to do before I go. Got to wrap up some work on The Power of I, my new book for Minutes Matter which will debut in April. I've got about a hundred drawings to finish for the first JVT Bedding module also for Minutes Matter. I've got fabric orders to fulfill and I need to get the kids ready to go back to college! Nine days? No problem!! I'll be gone for three weeks, two with my group of fellow designers and one extra week with the hubby in Paris.

Messa Frankfurt

The first stop on my Germany - France tour is Frankfurt, Germany for Heimtextile the worlds largest textile trade show. I've always wanted to attend this show and I still can't believe I am really going. I fly to Dallas and then get on a 9 1/2 hour flight to Frankfurt - UGHHH! Can you say leg cramps!!

My fellow traveler and Germany roommate Arizona designer, Susan Woodward, will be on my flight so hopefully we can spend some of that time planning our trade show attack strategy. I will be meeting up with Deb Barret, Susan Schultz, and a few other travelers in Frankfurt. Deb and Susan are the seasoned tour leaders and I am so looking forward to hearing some of their stories from past shows as well as picking up some tips about how to see the show at it's best. I can't imagine trying to navigate this trip on my own - it will be so much more fun with a great group of fabric and design addicts like myself!

I've been all over Europe but have never made it to Germany before. They tell me that Frankfurt is a very modern, industrial city that isn't much for sightseeing but apparently there are a few pockets of vintage German architecture that were rebuilt after World War II.

Most of the city was flattened by Allied bombs during the war. It looks like they tried to spare the Cathedral.

HEre is the most famous section of the old village. Doesn't this picture make you crave a beer and a pretzel? I plan on having a few of both!

Romer Square, Frankfurt Germany (via www.Panoramio)

I've been obsessing about the weather because it's just a tad bit colder over there than in Las Vegas. We're talking a high of 30' - 20" lows of 12' - 0' or below. Not something I am used to but I have been assured that I will hardly notice it! Yea, just like visitors to my home town don't notice the triple digit heat here in August.

Hauptewatche, Frankfurt Germany ( via www.panoramio)

I've already done quite a bit of shopping for cold weather gear, something that is in short supply here in Vegas.

Here is my fabulous although wayyyyy too expensive coat that will hopefully keep me from freezing (thank you Nordstroms - you came through for me again)

Packing for three weeks in Europe in the middle of winter is no easy task but I will admit to you now that I have lost my mind! My husband thinks I have really gone around the bend. Whenever we are going on a long trip I put out what I'm taking on a rolling rack so I can make sure that everything goes together etc. Well - the rack for this trip came out right after Christmas! I keep adding and subtracting items to it and worrying about how it is all going to fit in my very tiny suitcase. I am really becoming OCD about this as I get older. Oh well, for me it's part of the fun of traveling........

The value of this trip is $2800.00 !!!!!!!!

Now I have to admit that I was a bit miffed when I first heard of this great offer as I have already paid for my trip. Maison & Objet ~ Paris in January - Let's Go!!

I've been dreaming for years of taking a trip to the ultimate design show, Maison & Objet, held twice yearly in Paris but I never wanted to go alone so I put it off. I always thought it would be more fun to go with someone else who would be as excited about attending as I was. My friends Deb Barret and Susan Shultz attended every year and come back with such great inspiration, new products, and suppliers that they share with the attendees of the Window Fashions Expo and other WFCP events. I've been living vicariously through them for years but this year will be different. These fabulous ladies are putting together a small group of 12 lucky travelers to attend the Mason & Objet show with them!

I can't think of a better way to attend this show than with these two knowledgable ladies who have been every year for over ten years. They attend as trendspotters and industry insiders who have expanded access to the event and know the show inside and out. They have it wired and are now willing to share this priceless knowledge with newbies like myself!!!

They are offering a package deal that includes:

7 days /7 nights, January 18 - January 26, 2010, in the City of Lights

Airfiare from New York or Chicago, all airport transfers, luxury hotel accomodations (Double occupancy including breakfast)

All zone metro passes/carnets for 7 days.

Admission to Maison&Objet and Planet Mueble trade shows.

Welcome reception at M&O from show management

Exclusive M&O trend presentation with Q&A opportunity Priceless!

As-you-wish meet-ups for cocktails or dinner to review the day, compare notes, share stories, etc. ( This of course will be my favorite part!)

Pre-travel web session(s) with Deb and Susan to preview locations, M&O planning, travel details, our Paris faves and more

Cruise on the river Seine.

Free entrance to the Louvre or Orsay.

High Tea one afternoon in the Aubusson’s Grand Salon.

All taxes and service included.

And Deb & Susan's expansive knowledge of the city of Paris.

Visit Deb's website for more details and pricing.

We'll be staying at the Hotel d’ Aubusson, Four-star, double-occupancy Superior room in the heart of St. Germain (Super-convenient location and they've stayed in this hotel and love it!) Five minute walk to the subway, direct line to the show. Walking distance of the Louvre, Orsay, Notre Dame, Sorbonne; surrounded by art galleries, restaurants and shops.

I'm looking for a roomie so sign up quick. They have limited the group to twelve so we can still enjoy Paris without having to follow one of them holding a flag and yelling into a bullhorn everwhere we go! It should be a great intimate experience and a once in a lifetime chance to attend the show like you're a seasoned pro and gleen some great knowledge from these wonderful women.

I can't stress enough how great an opportunity this is. I hope you'll join me Deb & Susan for a cocktail as we cruise down the Siene.
